Garbage & Recycling Information

Waste Management is contracted by the city to pick up trash, and recycling.  Trash is picked up weekly on Wednesday. Recycling is picked up every other Wednesday. Recycling weeks are highlighted on the calendar below. The garbage rate is $21.63 monthly. The monthly De Soto Events Calendar notes whether it’s “Trash Pickup” week, or “Trash and Recycling Pickup” in case you need a quick reminder on the bottom of the home page.

Waste Management observes the following six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (prior to our normal service day), our collection day will be Thursday for that week. If the holiday is Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, our collection day will not change. The holiday schedule is effective for both trash, and recycling and only applies the week of the holiday. Service the week before and after the holiday will not be impacted.

Bulk Trash Pickup

Bulky items such as furniture & appliances can be picked up during regular trash Wednesdays, but the resident must purchase a sticker for each of these items at the De Soto City Hall. For furniture such as mattresses, sofas, etc. the sticker cost is $6 per item. For appliances such as stoves, washing machines, etc, the sticker cost is $27 per item. For more details on bulk trash pickup please call city hall or visit: https://www.wm.com/us/en/home/bulk-trash-pickup.

Citywide Cleanup Day

De Soto has a City Wide Spring Cleanup Day once a year. It happens every Spring on a Saturday–around the 2nd weekend of May. The official date will be posted first in the slideshow on the homepage, and later in the De Soto Newsletter. It will also be on the website’s upcoming events calendar for May. Spring Cleanup allows you to throw out extra junk on your curb that you may not be able to fit in your trash bin during weekly pickup. Most furniture items can be set out without a purchased sticker on this day, however, appliances are still required to have a sticker, which you can purchase for $27 at the city hall. Appliances put on the curb without a purchased sticker will not be picked up. Chemical waste and any junk items that involve pressurized cans are forbidden, as they pose a huge risk to the safety of our Waste Management employees and the environment. Please note that regular trash pickup will still occur on the Wednesdays before and after this Saturday event.
